[W. VA University Hospital, Morgantown, W. VA: A single 20-minute session of live therapeutic harp music significantly reduced pain, anxiety and muscle tension and reduced respiratory rates and systolic blood pressure in a group of 31 patients admitted for emergent illness or injury in the acute care med.-surg. unit. Most patients viewed the therapeutic music experience as impacting their hospitalization positively and stated that the positive effects outlasted the music session. A numeric rating scale was used to measure pain, muscle tension and anxiety. BR, HR and respiratory rates were also measured.]

[Carle Heart Ctr., Urbana, IL: Live harp music during cardiac electrophysiology studies decreased sinus node rate during music intervention in 14 subjects, who were consciously sedated. Effects lasted at least five minutes after intervention, and ectopy stopped as well. Chief of cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Abraham Kocheril said “the effects of music were above and beyond any expected changes. The findings support Kocheril’s hypothesis that live harp music decreases sympathetic tone and also suggests that there may be augmented parasympathetic tone.” The study is ongoing.]

Boone, A., & Quelch, V. (2003). Effects of harp music therapy on canine patients in the veterinary hospital setting. The Harp Therapy Journal, 8(2), 1, 4-5,15.
[Three groups of 32 canine patients received 60 minute sessions of harp therapy (Group 1: hospitalized less than 8 hrs.; Group 2: hospitalized longer than 8 hrs.; and Group 3: post-surgical patients). Visual measures of discomfort: restlessness, anxiety and respiration; all decreased during the harp therapy session. The control group displayed no such increase and, in fact, continued to increase in all three measures. The harp therapy group demonstrated a gradual decline in respiration rates over the on-hour in contrast to the control group – which remained unchanged during the same period. Both groups demonstrated a shallow trend in reduction of heart rate.]
Live vs. Recorded Music
Standley, J. (1992). Meta-analysis of research in music and medical treatment. Effect size as a basis for comparison across multiple dependent and independent variables. In R. Spintge & R. Droh (eds.) MusicMedicine. St. Louis, MO: MMB Music, Inc.
[In 1986 Jayne Standley reviewed over 98 empirical studies on the effects of music in medical treatment. 30 of the studies were amenable to a comprehensive meta-analysis of characteristics and results. Despite the small number of live music studies available, the meta-analysis seemed to confirm that live music is more effective than recorded music. (Effect size live = 1.10 (N = 12); recorded 0.86 (N = 117).]
Staneslow, S. (2006). Live music lulls newborns and slows heart rates. The Harp Therapy Journal. Macungie, PA. Vol. 11, No. 1. pp. 14-16.
[Study performed by Dr. Shmuel Arnon, a neonatologist, to determine the impact of live music on newborns at Meir Hospital in the town of Kfar Saba, Israel. The study was designed to test the difference in reaction between live, recorded and no music for healthy, newborn babies and was conducted over a period of several months. The live music intervention had no significant effect on the physiological and behavioral parameters during the 30-minute therapy; however, at the 30-minute interval after the therapy ended, it significantly reduced heart rate, induced a deeper sleep and improved the behavioral score. Recorded music and no-music interventions had no significant effect on any of the tested parameters during all intervals.]
Harp4all musicians strive for perfection, aren't you worth that?
1. The average wedding musician costs $559 in the United States and $4 cheaper in Riverside, California. According to http://www.costofwedding.com/index.cfm/action/search.weddingcost/zipcode/92503/cat/5/item/30
2. Why does a harpist charge different rates for a lever harp compared to an orchestra pedal harp. The answer is simple upkeep, insurance, maintenance; eg did you know that a harp goes through strings every 3 - 6 months retail for one octave roughly $43.00 - $135 for each octave set. http://www.vanderbiltmusic.com/strings.php
The harp strings make a huge difference in the sound of the harp, if their new and well taken care the harp will sing most beautifully even with bad or improper performance, but if old and uncared for the harp will sound very poor. Now, one could argue that the clien's ears are not tuned well enough to know how music should sound on a good harp, very true, but in the back of their mind something will not be right.
Besides harp strings, a harp needs regualtion, like a oil change for a car. Which is as costly as getting your new Mercedes an oil change.
3.So, why do some musicians charge more and others less, well there are certain varibles involved. Some wedding harpists have very little or no background in formal training in music, and typically play the instrument as they taught themselves to play. Also, many professional musicians that gig weddings do not have music theory, meaning they do not know how to read sheet music and have no training with rhythm. Now of course there are those with little background in formal lessons that actually have a natural gift with music, but if one was to get to know that person, they would find a logical reason why they perform so well without formal training.
4. What is involved for a musician to prepare for a wedding? Answer is the same as getting ready for any live performance, a lot of practicing with even more practicing. Roughly 3-8 hours of practicing a day for at least a month before the wedding, and of course a serious classical music much more time is needed to prepare.
5. Why don't you just prepare the week before and then just put out that music? Answer, yes some musicians do this on a regular basis and in reality the music is not perfect. However, on your wedding day, don't you want a musician that takes your wedding music serious by making it perfect?
